With the opportunity to end the game, was there any doubt Powell was going to leave the ball in the hands of senior quarterback Deuce Rodgers?
Needing a first down to run out the clock, Rodgers converted to give the Panthers a 42-35 home win on Friday night over Central in a matchup to determine first place in Region 2-5A.
“He’s earned that opportunity,” Powell coach Matt Lowe said about Rodgers. “He’s a third-year starter. He’s started 35, 40 games now in his career. He took those lumps as a sophomore so he could have moments like this two and a half years later.
“We’re obviously going to put it in his hands. We’re going to put it in that offensive line’s hands, the receivers, the running backs, they’re so unselfish, they’re sacrificing themselves, and he’s (Rodgers) out there banging the entire time. What an incredible team effort.”
