MARYVILLE — Jaxson Rutledge barrelled towards Zayden Williams.
Oak Ridge’s first drive against Maryville at Shields Stadium Thursday had just crossed midfield, but only for a moment.
As Williams gathered in Blaine Stansberry’s pass, Rutledge crashed into him and dislodging the ball. Ryan Henry jumped on it, and the Rebels scored nine plays later, opening the way for a convincing 34-0 rout of the Wildcats for the Region 2-6A title.
As it turned out, Maryville (9-1, 6-0 Region 2-6A) had all but locked up the No. 1 seed and a first round home game in the playoffs next week the moment Rutledge’s shoulder landed into Williams’ chest.
