The 5Star Preps area held its own at the 2025 TSSAA Cross Country Championships late last week at Shelby Farms Park in Memphis.
One team 3-peated as state champions.
And four individuals won state championships, as well.
Here’s what you need to know …
Division I, Class A Girls
Dresden freshman Hudson McDaniel claimed a TSSAA state championship with ease, posting a winning time of 19:12.20, some 18 seconds ahead of second place.
University School of Johnson City won the girls’ team title with 52 points. Gatlinburg-Pittman finished ninth.
Division I, Class A Boys
Dresden sophomore Vaughn Bounds posted a winning time of 16:18 to capture the TSSAA state championship by some 12 seconds over Happy Valley senior Jackson Smith. Gatlinburg-Pittman sophomore Bradyn Lewis placed fifth at 16:43.43.
University School of Johnson City won the boys’ team title at 69 points. Gatlinburg-Pittman was eighth.
Division I, Class AA Girls
Anderson County senior standout Ava Moody captured a TSSAA state title for the second year in a row with a winning mark of 18:20.45, roughly 19 seconds ahead of runner-up Arvella Nave — a sophomore from Elizabethton. Heritage freshman Hadleih Mitchey was third (18:57.39) and Heritage senior Avery Jo Thomas fifth (19:15.67).
Signal Mountain, though, won the girls’ team title with 46 points. Heritage finished second with 100. Alcoa was fifth (152).
Division I, Class AA Boys
Greeneville junior Trey Bailey coasted to the TSSAA boys’ title in Division I-AA, as his 15:12.89 mark cleared runner-up Wyatt Boling of Martin Luther King by 27 seconds. Alcoa sophomore Baker Brooks posted a ninth-place finish (16:30.79).
MLK won the boys’ team title at 67 points while Central Magnet was second at 89. Greeneville placed third with 97 points. Alcoa (237) was seventh.
Division I, Class AAA Girls
Brentwood senior Lauren Banovac posted her TSSAA state championship win in 17:17.15, clearing Rockvale senior and runner-up Lakin Hailey by exactly nine seconds. Hardin Valley junior Ana Berkheimer was the 5Star Preps’ area’s low finisher in Class AAA girls, as she placed 16th in 18:45.32.
Brentwood won the girls team title with a score of 44. Collierville was second at 101 and Hardin Valley fourth (141).
Division I, Class AAA Boys
Cleveland senior Owen Clemons led the pack in Class AAA at 15:06.37 to win his individual TSSAA title. Independence senior Asher Oates was second at 15:14.31 and Maryville junior Tommy Babbit third at 15:37.23.
Independence won the boys team title at 77 points. Farragut was fifth at 229 and HVA seventh at 238.
Division II, Class A Girls
Grace Christian freshman Sophie Lee placed second in this classification’s state meet, though St. Cecilia senior Maggie Crosslin took the crown in 18:34.64. Lee was runner-up at 19:03.16. CAK freshman Emery Adams claimed seventh (20:03.65).
Battle Ground Academy won the girls’ team title in Division II-A with a total of 72 points. Columbia Academy was second at 99. Grace Christian wound up third at 101.
Division II, Class A Boys
Duncan Oshumu, a sophomore at The King’s Academy, led the field in Division II-A to win a state title, his winning time being 15:48.47. Second-place Noah Losacker of Lakeway Christian, did his run in 16:15.96.
Davidson Academy proved to be the winning team in Division II-A boys with 60 points, followed by University School of Nashville (96) and Lakeway Christian (99). CAK placed sixth at 170.
Division II, Class AA Girls
Runners from Webb School of Knoxville and Knoxville Catholic populated much of the leaderboard in Division II-AA, with Webb senior Calysta Garmer claiming individual state championship honors at 17:05.62. The state title is the second in as many years for Garmer.
Her time edged Baylor freshman Addy Cotter by roughly 23 seconds. Webb seniors Jazzlyn Garmer and Carolina Areheart finished third and fourth, respectively, at 17:30.34 and 18:07.90. Knoxville Catholic senior Kacey Holliday (18:34.33) and Catholic sophomore Drew Gerken (18:48.97) took sixth and eighth, respectively, while Webb junior Emma Cissna (19:01.41) placed ninth.
Webb claimed the Division II-AA girls state team title for a third consecutive season and did it with a low total of 33 points. Catholic was second place at 66 in the 12-team field.
Webb now has 13 all-time state team title in girls cross country.
Division II, Class AA Boys
Four McCallie runners finished in the top 10, led by individual champion Andrew Beroset. The junior won the individual title in 15:03.60, 23 seconds ahead of Baylor senior Marshall McConville. Catholic junior Cade Duncanson was our area’s best finisher, as he took 13th (16:07.42).
McCallie went super low to win the boys’ team title in Division II-AA with a mark of 31 points. Baylor was second at 71 and Knoxville Catholic third at 95.
