MARYVILLE — On a day when he and his teammates kept a date with destiny, Gaven French’s duties weren’t quite over. The junior had already taken a line drive off his hamstring, worked through opposing traffic, and already watched Heritage scratch out the only run he would get.
So when French walked back to the mound in the bottom of the seventh inning Thursday, with Heritage three outs from history, he did not need much more.
“When we got that one run in the fifth, I knew I had it,” French said. “I’m a competitor, so when I went out there in the seventh, I just had full confidence in me and my guys to make plays for me, and they did.”
French, who has committed to Tennessee, made sure one run was enough.
