South Pittsburg is the gold standard in Class 1A football in Tennessee, ever since the Pirates won their first TSSAA state championship in the playoff era way back in 1969.
Exactly 56 years ago to the day Friday in Nashville, the Pirates handled Tennessee Prep 26-6 to claim their first of seven state titles.
In high school football terms, it was the start of something special for the small town, located near Chattanooga that borders the Tennessee and Alabama state lines.
Coalfield has a chance to make some history of its own on several fronts Friday night at 7 when the Yellow Jackets (11-2) host the Pirates (12-1) in a much-anticipated 1A semifinal game.
