MARYVILLE — Will Jones noticed the rotation.
Right as the Maryville quarterback gathered in the snap on a critical third-and-17, he saw two Riverdale defenders switch in an attempt to try and take away play-making wide receiver Tory Beaufort.
The play call, known in the Rebels’ huddle as “Gator,” was initially meant for Beaufort on the key third-quarter play, but the switch allowed for a bust in the Warriors’ coverage and Colton Foust was running open 60 yards downfield.
Jones adjusted and uncorked a pass to Foust, who hauled it in before being dragged down at the 5-yard line. Two plays later, Cam Porter ran into the end zone and Maryville, seconds after having its back against the wall in a Class 6A second round playoff game Friday, had an emphatic answer on a night full of them in a 47-18 triumph over Riverdale at Shields Stadium.
