Consider it a shock Tuesday if some individual golfer or team from the 5Star Preps area doesn’t capture a TSSAA state championship on Tuesday.
Because after Monday’s first round at Sevierville Golf Club, plenty are in the mix.
The Knoxville Catholic high school girls’ golf team led the Division II-AA state tournament after Day One, as its 5-over-par 145 mark was one stroke better than Baylor and two shots better than St. Agnes and St. Mary’s.
Teagan Walker led the Lady Irish with a bogey-free, 1-under 69 on the Highlands Course. That placed her second, individually, on the Division II-AA girls leaderboard — some three shots back of leader Jada Lin (St. Mary’s). Her Catholic teammate Linzy Johnson overcame a tough start but rallied to shoot a first-round 76.
Both the Hardin Valley boys and girls golf teams have feasible shots at winning Division I-AA state titles on Tuesday.
The Hawks positioned themselves in second place after Monday’s first round, firing a collective total of 1-under 287, which trailed defending-champion Brentwood by just four.
HVA’s Conner Williams, who’s tied for ninth, shot an opening 1-under 71 on the River Course.
Jake Sheffield, the 2025 5Star Preps Masters champion, birdied his final four holes Monday to get back to even par (72). HVA’s Arjun Patel and Hunter Mousa also shot 72s. Mousa shot 3-under 33 on his second nine to help HVA stay within striking distance.
Walker Valley’s Cody Walter topped the Division I-AA boys individual leaderboard at 67.
Bearden’s Charlie Culbertson is one shot back. Maryville’s Leo Huddleston (72) and Ray Rebell (73) could challenge for the individual crown on Tuesday with opportunistic low rounds.
In Division I-AA girls, HVA occupied third place after Day One, its 16-over 156 total trailing leaders Page and Dickson County by eight strokes apiece.
HVA’s Addisyn Newman, who nearly won it all last season, tied for third in the first round with a round of 72. She’s five back of first-round leader Poppy Pewitt of Dickson County. Pewitt and Newman were part of the three-person playoff for the 2024 individual girls title in Division I-AA, which was won by Sophia Gambini of William Blount.
Farragut’s Harper Holmes was in 10th place Monday after a 77.
