GREENEVILLE 4, SOUTH GIBSON 1
Greeneville scored its 10th win in a row, knocking off South Gibson by a 4-1 count Wednesday in a game played at Smyrna.
Kobe Mundy’s single to short left gave Greeneville a 3-1 advantage, as the left fielder dove and missed it and subsequent throwing errors allowed Carson Norris, Noah Murray and Mundy to score.
Cade Allen, a South Gibson junior and Tennessee baseball commit, went six innings and striking out nine against four walks. The 6-foot-1, 190-pounder allowed four hits.
Carson Quillen got the start for Greeneville and worked 4.1 innings, scattering five hits. He struck out three and walked two.
Greeneville (33-8) will face Upperman at 12:30 p.m. Thursday in a winners bracket game at Smyrna. The winner moves on to the state semifinals and will have to be beaten twice Friday to not reach Saturday’s championship game. Should Greeneville lose the 12:30 game Thursday, it would play again at 5 p.m. Thursday.
COALFIELD 5, BRADFORD 4
A catcher by trade, Coalfield baseball star Luke Treece showed some pitching prowess Wednesday night when it mattered most.
With the Yellow Jackets clinging to a one-run lead against Bradford in a Class 1A opening round game, Treece struck out the side in the seventh inning to preserve the 5-4 victory.
A three-time Mr. Baseball finalist and one-time winner (2023), Treece struck out four batters total in his 1.2 innings of work. He did not allow a run and surrendered one hit.
He also went 2 for 3 at the plate with a walk.
Coalfield (30-5) advanced into the winners bracket where it will play McKenzie (21-11) at 12:30 p.m. Central time Thursday. Should Coalfield win, it would advance into a position where it’d have to be beaten twice Friday not to reach Saturday’s 1A Championship.
Should Coalfield drop the game against McKenzie, the Yellow Jackets would play a 5 p.m. elimination game Thursday night.
One thing’s for certain, Coalfield was serious about winning Wednesday, posting four runs in the top of the first inning. Treece got it going with a single after a Levi Heidel walk to begin the game.
Heidel later scored off an error. Jorden Steinhauer, Knox Pemberton and Kaleb Langley then followed with RBIs.
Jackson Treece singled to center in the top of the fourth to make Coalfield’s lead 5-2.
