MURFREESBORO — Inclement weather continued to wreak havoc on the TSSAA Spring Fling Schedule on Wednesday.
But some location sites found pockets of kinder skies that allowed play to commence.
Here’s a recap of some of the games we couldn’t get to, just to keep you in the know on their progress.
BASEBALL
The Powell Baseball team won an elimination game in Class 4A on Wednesday morning, 10-3 over Centennial. Logan Poteet with 2 for 2 with two walks with Jaxon Truman drove in three runs to lead the Powell offense on a 2-for-3 day at the plate. That win put the Panthers into a Wednesday night showdown with Stewarts Creek, the winner moving on to Thursday’s semifinals. But weather interrupted play, stopping the game with Powell trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the third inning. Play will resume, weather permitting, on Thursday at noon Central.
Catholic needed a win over McCallie on Wednesday afternoon to advance to Thursday’s championship game. But McCallie pulled away for an 8-2 win in the Division II-AA semifinal at Wilson Central High School. That meant Catholic had to beat Lipscomb on Wednesday night for a chance to play McCallie in the tournament finals. Catholic trailed Lipscomb, 2-0, after the first inning Wednesday night but rallied for runs in the third, fifth and sixth inning to take a 3-2 lead before weather postponed the game. The contest will resume Thursday morning at 11 a.m. Central.
Loudon dropped a 1-0 decision on Tuesday but fended off elimination Wednesday morning with an 11-7 win over Adamsville. Freshman designated hitter Jayden Capshaw went 3 for 3 with three RBIs in the win. Braxton Roberts was 3 for 3 with two RBIs. Junior infielder Matthew Meade was 2 for 4 with two RBIs for Loudon. But the Redskins dropped the next game, 15-5, to Loretto and had its season end. Jaxon Walker led Loudon in the loss with a 3-for-3 day with three RBIs.
Coalfield won its continued game from Tuesday night by a 7-5 count on Wednesday morning. Aiden Sexton and Brayden Burgess drove in two runs apiece for Coalfield. But Eagleville, which is getting to play in the comforts of its home stadium, blanked Coalfield, 13-0, on Wednesday afternoon. Coalfield (28-11) will play Thursday morning against Bradford (18-20) for a chance to move on to the semifinals to play Eagleville.
SOFTBALL
Gibbs won its opener Tuesday 3-0 but dropped its second game, 12-9, to Hardin County. Gibbs trailed in the contest 6-0, rallied to knot the score at 6-all in the bottom of the fifth but couldn’t keep Hardin County in check.
The Lady Eagles fought off elimination later on Wednesday, though, topping Soddy-Daisy, 9-3. Jordann Reagan had a 3-for-3 day at the plate with an RBI while Emma Keck went 3 for 4 with two RBIs.
Gibbs (40-5) faces Lincoln County (26-11-1) at 10 a.m. Thursday for a spot in a semifinal game Friday morning.
Jo Byrns wasn’t a welcomed opponent in Class 1A softball to neither Oliver Springs nor Harriman on Wednesday. Jo Byrns eliminated them both from the bracket. Oliver Springs opened play Tuesday with a whopping 22-2 win but fell Wednesday to Huntland 9-0. That put OS in a losers bracket contest against Jo Byrns, which OS lost 6-1.
Jo Byrns eliminated Harriman, 9-5, in a Wednesday morning elimination game. Harriman’s season concluded with a 20-5 mark. Anna Garland went 3 for 5 in the contest for the Lady Blue Devils and teammate Lily Taylor was 3 for 4 with three RBIs.
Lakeway Christian finally got to make its state-tournament debut late on Wednesday and promptly took a 3-0 lead over Donelson Christian Academy in the Division II-A opener. But the Lions couldn’t hold on and fell, 6-4. Abby Goodall led Lakeway with a 1-for-3 day and two-run homer in the first inning. Lakeway (27-5) will face Jackson Christian (29-7) on Thursday morning in an elimination game.
