When Anderson County coach Davey Gillum reflects on last year’s Class 4A state quarterfinal in Greeneville, he initially recalls it being the biggest atmosphere he’s been a part of, in terms of attendance.
“It was slam-packed,” he said. “There were a lot of people who weren’t even Anderson County or Greeneville people at that game.”
Even people who lived outside of the state’s borders — from multiple Southeastern states, even — contacted Gillum to let him know they had journeyed in to watch. Some area football coaches, whose teams had already been eliminated from playoff contention, went to see it, too.
